A new wine company is hoping to lead the way in producing lower-alcohol wines and promoting responsible drinking. DB Wines was formed by a consortium of individuals and businesses from the American and European wine industry and the company has

created a

portfolio of lower-alcohol wines to be sold in the UK. The Sovio range, which consists of a Spanish sparkling white and rosé, has an abv of 8 per cent and will be trialled in the on-trade before being launched in the off-trade. Mark Beasley will head up the UK operation.

David Campbell,

co-founder of wine website, has been awarded the Legion d'Honneur by the French government. The award for services to publishing was

Gerard Errera . Campbell was instrumental in the creation of the French wine book, Guide Hachette des Vins and is publisher of the Everyman Library.

A tree festooned with lights powered by exercise bikes will be the main feature of Fetzer activity at the Big Chill music festival from Aug 3 - 5. The Californian wine brand will use the "bicycle tree" to focus festival-goers' minds on carbon emissions.

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

All across England and Wales, vineyards are being harvested. Down winding country lanes come armies of welly-wearing conscripts wielding secateurs and buckets, ready to reap the rewards of our vines. Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride. Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
