Fancy yourself as a Master of Wine?

The Institute of Masters of Wine is inviting applications for the first year Master of Wine education programme in the 2007/08 academic year.

Applicants will need to submit a detailed application form outlining their professional qualifications and wine industry experience. In addition, they will need to prepare a short essay on a given topic, write up a tasting paper and secure the support of a wine industry referee.

Those not currently actively involved in the wine industry may be required to attend an interview. Applicants will be informed of the results in late October.

The IMW was established in London in 1953, and more than 2,000 candidates have sat its wine exams since then. It has 257 members from 22 countries.

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

All across England and Wales, vineyards are being harvested. Down winding country lanes come armies of welly-wearing conscripts wielding secateurs and buckets, ready to reap the rewards of our vines. Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride. Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
