Majestic wins Wine Challenge title

Majestic picked up the top retail award at last night's International Wine Challenge presentation at London's Grosvenor House hotel. The chain was named as wine merchant of the year and best high street chain.

Tesco picked up the prize for wine supermarket of the year. Dan Jago, Jason Godley and the team were recognised for their work in revitalising the Tesco wine range – a process which has earned them praise from both the trade and consumers.

Thresher picked up a special education award for its commitment to training.

Secret Cellar in London was named best small independent wine merchant.

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

All across England and Wales, vineyards are being harvested. Down winding country lanes come armies of welly-wearing conscripts wielding secateurs and buckets, ready to reap the rewards of our vines. Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride. Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
