Manchester Trading Standards carried out a number of test purchases in stores in Eastlands, Longsight and Hulme in September and October 2005 following customer complaints about pricing.
One of the offers the three stores failed to honour was 20 per cent off ale and cider.
Councillor Neil Swannick, of Manchester City Council said: These stores have a responsibility and a duty of care to their customers to not renege on any deals or mislead their customers through the prices they are offering. This prosecution shows that no store however large is above the law and we will not hesitate to prosecute them.”
The retailer was fined £3,500 and ordered to pay £3,700 at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Sept 10 after pleading guilty to seven offences of giving misleading price indications.
